Eye of the Storm by Charles Soule (4.5/5)

 Issue #1 of Charles Soule’s Eye of the Storm comic duology follows the Eye of the Nihil, Marchion Ro himself, information about his father and grandmother, and the relationship that he has with Mari San Tekka, a crucial part of phase one of The High Republic. Even though I’m not the biggest Marchion Ro fan out there, I really enjoyed this story more than I thought I would, so much so that I give it 4.5/5 stars. I don’t have too much to say, because I specifically don’t want to speculate too far on this duology because of my level of fear. Yes, Marchion, I am scared of you. Are you happy?

The worldbuilding surrounding the Evereni is natural storytelling and simply wonderful. I don’t think I had heard of the Evereni until I read Eye of the Storm, and now I have the basic ideas of who they are as a people. It’s quite clear from the beginning how Everon is described as a stormy place, a tempest place, and how that imagery and language has bled into the structuring of the Nihil. We even see that Ro’s great-grandmother created the Nihil, and how the role of Eye has passed through the lineage down to Marchion himself.

I think it’s always eerie to see the villains in our stories as children, especially if they are still terrifying in some way as children. Marchion Ro fits that bill. This first issue actually made me kind of scared of him in a way I hadn’t been before. This guy was scary as a kid, and now that he’s an adult, he’s legitimately terrifying.

The final pages… I have to say that while they are beautiful, I do not like seeing Chancellor Soh potentially dead in the corner there. Matari and Voru wouldn’t let that happen, right? Right?

In short, I really enjoyed this issue, and I am eagerly awaiting the second half of the story. I’m also horribly terrified for the next issue to come out because I’m scared for my favourites, okay? Eye of the Storm #2 is due out on 2 March.

 The audio drama Tempest Runner by Cavan Scott is, in a word, fantastic. Set in the High Republic era of the Star Wars universe, it focuses on Tempest Runner Lourna Dee, one of the leaders of the Nihil. Set after the disastrous events of The Rising Storm and the Republic Fair, we get a glimpse into the backstory, the ‘fall’ and subsequent rise (possibly higher than ever) of the feared Twi’lek woman. Prior to listening to the audio drama, I was curious about Dee’s character, but I wasn’t sure about her all that much. After listening, however, I was in awe of her backstory and what will happen next with her character! More Lourna Dee content can’t come fast enough. Path of Vengeance by Cavan Scott (5/5) [CONTAINS SPOILERS]

Path of Vengeance by Cavan Scott is the second YA novel of Star Wars: The High Republic phase two. This novel encapsulates the events of the Battle of Jedha and the Battle of Dalna, with the Battle for the Path in between the two. These events have previously been seen through other perspectives in The Battle of Jedha by George Mann (audiobook), Cataclysm by Lydia Kang (adult novel), Quest for Planet X (middle grade novel) by Tessa Gratton, and The High Republic by Cavan Scott (comics). One of the biggest drawbacks from this book, through no fault of Scott or his co-writers in the initiative, is the fact that it does spoil the comics, as some have not come out yet due to delays. However, I find the story intriguing enough that knowing how it ends isn’t going to remove my enjoyment of the ending of the comics at all, this is just something that ought to be considered noteworthy. The Odyssey of Star Wars by Jack Mitchell (5/5)

Jack Mitchell’s The Odyssey of Star Wars is brilliant on a level that I cannot explain. I read it on the recommendation of a friend of mine, and I could not be happier that I did. I rated it five stars, and that is an honest as heck rating that I don’t see changing. One of my favourite things about these ‘retellings’ of Star Wars in the style of the classics is that there is so many themes that come from the classics that we see in Star Wars that prove how strong and important these classics are when examining modern media. I’m going to be honest, if someone tells me that The Odyssey of Star Wars isn’t canon, I will not care. Anything in this book, I will take it as canon because it all makes sense to me in how it flows.
